It was just right - not too complex, but very useful! Known from Office up to Office Not a space bar like the keyboard, but one that says how much space you've used and how much you have left! Oops, I realise I posted this as a suggestion to Word online by mistake. Here is this suggestion posted to Word for desktop. Please vote for it if you also find the new style icons a problem.
Right-mouse click on any vacant spot on the desktop, New, Shortcut. EXE" for excel, similar ones for other Office Programs. Your location of the programs may vary, but this is what worked for me. In the name, accept the suggestion. This will put an Excel shortcut on your desktop, and you can change the icon to anything you want, either from icon files on your computer, or you can download free icons from the internet.

NB I have quite lengthy QATs, so what I'd love is a simple way of swapping to the old-style icons, not some complicated way of fudging individual buttons, though if that's the only way to go, I'd consider that for some of the more obscure symbols. This seems a classic case of over design: Office had a functional set of clear icons, and now they've had to make them stylishly unfunctional.
